Department of Sociology

I. About Us

The Department of Sociology was established in 2006 as the second academic institution which provides bachelor’s degree program of Sociology established in Guangdong, China. Since 2011, the Department provides Experimental Innovative Program which is a developing program for graduate studies.

 

By September 2015, the Department has 11 academic and teaching staff, with 3 professors, 1 associate professor, among which 10 have doctoral degree. 5 faculty members received the “Teaching Award” granted by the University and 1 received the “Outstanding Teacher Award” granted by the University. The Department has invited and hired several renowned scholars from in and abroad to be adjunct professors.

 

By the end of 2014, faculty members of the Department received 8 national grants, 21 provincial and horizontal funds, with a total amount of 1.5 million yuan. More than 60 papers were published in top journals in CSSCI, such as Social Sciences in China Press, Sociology, and Socialism Studies. More than 10 researches won the first and the second awards at the provincial level.

 

1.   Education Outcomes

Our graduates are qualified and eligible for a wide range of positions in government departments, NGOs, news and media, market and policy consultancy, research institutes and private enterprises.

 

2.  Core Courses

The undergraduate program of sociology provides core courses including but not limited to Introduction of Sociology, Social Research and Methodology, Social Statistics and SPSS, Social Psychology, Chinese Social Ideology History, Western Social Ideology History, Social Management, Cultural Anthropology, Urban Sociology, Rural Sociology, Economic Sociology, Legislation Sociology, Industrial Sociology, Development Sociology, Population Sociology, Family Sociology, Introduction of Social Work, Social Security, Principles of Management, Market Survey and consultation and , Field Work , etc..

 

3. Practice

The Department has Laboratory of Telephone Interview and Laboratory of Social Statistics Analysis, established more than 30 student teaching bases, and offers regular communication with Hong Kong social workers.
